Problem

Many users cannot read content from SharePoint in English or any other language they are not familiar with. How do I make other languages available? Follow this solution...

Solution

SharePoint 2010 has feature which can now have content displayed in their own regional language. This is done by setting up the  linguistic feature in SharePoint 2010. This tip illustrates how to install language packs for SharePoint 2010.

You can have sites displayed to users in their own regional languages as long as it is approved by Microsoft. Follow these steps to set it up in your environment.

For each language pack you will need to carry out the steps below on each web server. However, remember that every language installed has unique name, hence you will need to save this to a separate folder to avoid overwriting of another language pack

Download language pack from here

In this example I have selected Hindi (see image below) and hit Change button

You will be directed to the following page. Here you will see that the content is now in the language you selected i.e. Hindi

Select 'download' from the button (top left hand corner ).p> Accept the agreement

Installation of the Language pack will start in the language you selected as below:

Once completed it will ask you to run the configuration wizard. (Just follow the obvious steps.)

Once done you will notice a new folder for the language Id that is added at the following path:

%COMMONPROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Shared\Web server extensions\14\LAYOUTS\1081

1081 is the language id for hindi

Also, to confirm, you can check the language pack installation by going to:

'Central Administration --> Upgrade and Migration --> Check product and patch installation status.

YYou will see this:

To view the site in your local language you have to select the language from the top right corner of the ribbon as shown below:

Here is the result
